Sakura no Hanabiratachi...A Lesson in Success

Chris, I would take it further in that there is an active movement in Japan to artificially keep Hello Project's overall domestic profile as low as possible; to limit it to primarily TV and a trickle of actual CDs, DVDs and other H!P merchandise that reaches Japanese retail shelves.

H!P is a club, an inside act. It is limited to the H!P Fan Club and the more than 100,000 people that I have heard are active members. I was stunned at the lack of any H!P, Morning Musume, C-ute and Berryz Kobo CDs, DVDs are even available at regular retail outlets.

Even the crazy Akihabara district stores had precious little H!P merchandise and AKB48 is limited to its tiny theater and modest gift shop/cafe.

And, you know, I really didn't mind it. It just makes what we have here in this country -- free and open choices -- much more enjoyable. It makes me even more appreciative of colleagues, like yourself, who have stumbled on a Land of Oz in popular music and dance. Who cares if it ever gains any mainstream acceptance, even in its own country, for crying out loud?

It also makes me greatly appreciate American Wota and International Wota. I actually consider it a badge of honor to get panned by Ray, C.J., wu-san, pengie, Jin or anyone else who whacks me every time I blog something dumb.

No doubt the best years of my life have been the past two, and I have J-pop to thank for that. I'm actually starting to gain appreciation of other groups apart from all-girl J-pop (which remains par excellence).

As for AKB48, yes, the production values are great, and you can't believe what a 50-inch plasma HDTV, an HDMI connection to a region-free DVD player, and a few modest speakers can do for these concerts. Holy moly, bring it on.

See you at Japan Nite 2008 on March 21.
