"Densha Otoko" The Series. A "Sort-of" Retro Review

Comments

Just like you imagined, waiting a whole week for a new Densha Otoko episode wasn't one of my best experiences, and that was my first time watching something at the same time it aired in Japan... It was fun seeing the discussions about the dorama back then while I waited, but that didn't help so much T_T But eventually I got used to it, since the same thing happened with a bunch of anime and with Hana Yori Dango season 2.

For quite obvious reasons, this dorama was very famous around the anime community back when it was released, I discovered it through an anime forum back when there were 2 episodes or so released. It was my first dorama, and still one of my favorites (now it's 4th place, loses to GTO, HYD and Nobuta wo Produce...)

About the origin of the series, you forgot to say that it was released as a book before being adapted to film and TV series. The book is mainly a compilation of the whole 2-channel thread about Densha. If you're interested, there's an English translation of the original posts here. And add me to the group of people who told you that the TV series is far superior.

I love Shiraishi Miho's character in this! I laughed every time they played that Star Wars tune when she appeared. She does deserve an award.

Where's the credit to Sambomaster and their great "Sekai wa Sore wo Ai to Yobun da ze", Densha Otoko's ending theme? Or maybe it's just me thinking that was great...
I meant to look for the information on the Sambomaster song, then I just forgot to include it, sorry. It should've been mentioned. After all, they were even IN the show! I'd like to see the other three you mentioned. BTW, what does GTO stand for? Or was that the full name of the dorama? Thanks for the feedback!
GTO stands for Great Teacher Onizuka, but you'll usually find it under the abbreviated name. It's a story about a motorcycle gang member turned teacher of a class full of problem students, and how he gradually gains the students' respect and helps them with their problems. It's a formula of "school drama" that's very common in Japan, especially thanks to another dorama series called "3nen Bgumi Kinpachi-sensei", which is in its 8th season already (something unique as far as I know in Japanese doramas, most I've seen excluding this was Trick, which ended in 3 seasons). I recommend jdorama for info and d-addicts for torrents if you plan on watching more doramas.
I totally love Densha Otoko.....last semester the Japanese Club host a film fest and Densha Otokoo was the last movie we saw. I got interested and watch the drama series. I wish I could find a non-bootleg copy of the series subtitle but I guess I'll stick to watching it on veoh.
I forgot the other lame thing about my DVD copy, they cut out all of the sponsor mentions, the problem with that is usually those were shown over actual parts of the show. It's easy to tell where they were because the scenes in which they occur are obviously "chopped". Oh well. Like you said, we still have Veoh
